Has it really been over two months since I posted last? ugh. At some point I will babble about the television I've been watching, including The Defenders which I actually enjoyed SORRY to be weird as usual. But before that, I really need a reader for my [livejournal.com profile] dcu_bang story?

I do have one beta already on it but I think it came out a little wordy for her to handle on her own. Kara/Mon-El divergence AU, 36k. You don't have to be a hardcore grammar nerd unless that's your thing, here's the list of things that probably need checking:

-did I get excited by an idea and fail to finish the sentence I was working on
-did my phone app insert a word in the middle of a different word just to fuck with me
-is my portrayal of Krypton distractingly weird to someone more familiar with the wider DCU (for this you would only need to read the first 10k!)
-do the action scenes make any sense
-does the rest of it make any sense

If you can only read for one of these things it would be perfectly cool and a ten day or less turnaround would be ideal?

PS it mostly takes place on Daxam, so warnings for Daxam being a terrible place! Nothing graphic though.

And while you are doing that I will try not to flub this [community profile] fandomgrowthexchange deadline, ugh. They have open pinch hits if unlike me you are not already screwing up the whole writing to a schedule thing.

*blows kisses to everyone*

1. Cuddly kitten. When I work from home, he likes to hang out on my desk, or on my lap, or doze behind my computer, or pounce on sunbeams in my home office. ♥

2. It was cold this morning -- first frost tipping the grasses. So I am wearing leggings, a short denim skirt, a rose-colored tunic, and my knee-high deep-red Doc Marten boots. I am super goddamn cute today, y'all.

3. Ginger peach fizzy water. Om nom nom.

4. I have Yuletide canon in my possession, and hope to start reviewing it later today.

5. Exercising good self-care, I am closing FB again, and instead of reading things that make me sad and angry, I am going to pet my kitten.

A beautifully drawn, honest coming-of-age memoir centered on the world of competitive skating. The drawings are fascinating and understatedly emotional. I read this fairly long graphic memoir in one sitting. Walden's social anxiety and coming out story are intensely relatable.

This author-artist is just 21, and I eagerly look forward to her future work.

can anyone help me with a chrome browser issue? i followed online instructions regarding zoom but it is not applying my instructions. I also restarted the computer, and no dice.

I have Chrome zoom set to 125%, but when i load twitter and tweetdeck, it reverts to about 55% zoom. I have to adjust it with every page re-load. This doesn't seem to happen on random other websites, but I can't find anything within twitter that adjusts zoom.

ETA: went to tool bar, View --> actual size. This fixes the problem temporarily but does not save? I just had to do it again. This is just super annoying and frustrating!

(If it's not someone reading this, I'm going to be very surprised. Impressed, but surprised.)

Today's been tough, social-media-wise, so I am closing all of the tabs containing non-dw (realname) social media, and cultivating some gratitudes.

1. Kitten falling asleep on my lap at lunchtime, warm and purring and paws splayed in complete relaxation.

2. Takeout Chinese for lunch with [personal profile] sanj on the spur of the moment. With bonus kitten sitting on the chair at the head of the table, and periodically sticking his head up over the edge of the table to see if we would let him eat our chicken. (Which we wouldn't.)

3. The new mini-season of Voltron went live this past weekend! Kiddo and [personal profile] sanj and I watched half of it last night, and it's delightful.

4. Yesterday I roasted some delicata squash (seasoned with salt and pepper and curry powder) and then roasted the seeds (boiled briefly, then seasoned the same way.) It pleases me to have turned something I would ordinarily have thrown away into tasty snack food.

5. Dinner for tonight is already made, so when I get home from work around 5:30 I can mostly relax. There's work I need to do, but if I don't do it tonight, nothing will catch on fire.

How are y'all holding up? Be gentle with yourselves.

All this beauty passing by me.

It's not that I didn't think there were any photos of me on Facebook so much that - okay, I need to back up a bit. Last week - no, more than that. This is a big thing that only tangentially relates to me, so let me just start off with the biggest piece of news.

My younger brother's going to be on television.

Starting on Wednesday, on Fusion TV at 8 PM, Car vs. America is going live with my younger brother as one of the co-hosts. He's the taller one. This has been in production for months now, with a backstory that reads like a classic British sitcom, what with the website where he works getting sold and bought with the new owners wanting to recruit TV talent from outside the company and then looking within the existing employment pool and a whole roundabout of their TV show pitch working its way to be pitched right back to them almost exactly the same. He's given me behind the scenes stories of fights with producers I don't care to recount and every so often he stumbles back to New York City for a few days before heading back out to Pennsylvania for a story on a 25-year wait on imports or a drive from LA to Seattle following the most amusing route possible.

And this Wednesday, it goes on TV.

Last Tuesday, I saw the first episode. I saw it at the premiere party at the downtown office where he goes on the days he goes into an office. It was a fun half-hour of TV, lots of laughs, and yes, it's basically my younger brother up there. The party was definitely a party, with people hanging around and chatting and having fun with drinks and snacks and toys, and I was the first person there to figure out how to make the RC cars - "analog drones," I joked - go backwards. Someone was going around taking pictures, from informal snaps to serious smiles.

I'm in three of them. Six, seven, and nine, the one in the striped high-low dress. Front and center, even, in seven. In the ninth one I'm way on the upper left corner, but that's me up there. I deactivated my account years ago and didn't know until I found out almost by accident, when I heard my father tell someone else about the dress I wore. So I could've gone on for ages not knowing instead of just being taken by surprise a few days after the fact.

(It's dark rum and pineapple juice on the rocks, if you're wondering, and it wasn't the only reason I was smiling.)

It was a deeply enjoyable party, even if twice someone first gave my older brother a handshake - he's in a few, most clearly in the second-to-last where he's holding up a promotional T-shirt - and then moved to give me a hug. People I'd never met or even heard of, moving in for a hug. I didn't hug back, just stayed standing still, and then put out my hand for a shake. If they'd hugged my brother first, I'd have hugged back, since that would've been a sign of how things were done. But, as they didn't, I myself didn't reciprocate.

Still, even for that happening twice, I had fun. I got a t-shirt and some banana pudding and a couple of drinks, and it turns out, there's new pictures of me on Facebook.

And my younger brother's going to be on TV in a few days. Which is, I gotta say, pretty darn cool of him.

And I think, in that one picture, that's a pretty good smile.

Sunday gratitudes

1. A good night's sleep, followed by Mexican breakfast and coffee and the Times on my laptop.

2. Making slow cooker chicken bouillabaisse again because it was so good last week.

3. A mellow Sunday of playdates (for the kiddo) and cooking and laundry (me), with the promise of [personal profile] sanj coming over later.

4. I am considering whether I can spring for Hugh Acheson's new slow cooker cookbook.

5. It is a spectacularly beautiful day. I am sitting on my mirpesset, listening to the wind chime, watching birds soar overhead.

How are y'all?

Two session post

Session 21: We finished off the Rick and Morty tower, defeating the Meeseeks that had taken over the top level. Rick had managed to turn himself into a squirrel (SQUIRREL RICK!) and we actively stopped him from changing back. Kaz was going to eat him, but turns out squirrels can still cast banishment. We made it back to town with a bunch of cursed magical items. We went to rest for the night, and the new ranger, Rook, and the rogue, Raven, got into a conflict over whether we should chase some draft dodgers.

Session 22: this was the epic 12 hour session where we made it to the Citadel, the ancient fortress that once served the realm.

It started off with the fall out from the conflict between the ranger and the rogue, which led to the dwarf and rogue signing a contract (basically a non-aggression pact). This was only enjoyable because the ranger and rogue are played by a husband and wife, so they were clearly comfortable playing the intense argument out.

Heading on to the Citadel was really a testament to the DM, building a sense of foreboding as we got closer and began to explore the rooms. We fought a chain devil that nearly killed Kaz, and then met a tressym (flying cat) that was actually the avatar of the consciousness that inhabits the fortress. Apparently mind flayers are invading the fortress in the hopes of taking the memories stored there.

Fighting the mind flayer thralls became a running theme as each memory we went into was threatened by increasing numbers of foes. Going back through the memories of what we discovered was really Damian, the father of vampires, we had the option to parlay with the elven queen to release Damian's true love. The elven queen requested we kill Rao, father of beasts. After nearly dying in combat with the mind flayer lurking near Rao's prison, we discovered that Rao was a werewolf. A BIG werewolf. Battling in the prison, we managed to contain him for the most part, although he was just so fast Kaz barely got an attack in - but by Thor, when he did! Four swings in one turn, three hits and one critical. He nearly killed me almost immediately after, but it was enough for the gunslinger to take the final shot as the wolf tried to flee.

We were running against time for most of the past few sessions, but I think we've reached a point in the story where the fate of the world comes before the fate of piddling nations. I realised something else - that I see the DM as the person who has read ahead in the book we're all experiencing, rather than someone making it all up.
